Damp clumps of snow fell off the branches and rained onto him as he shoveled.

a sudden breeze
blew up.

ashes from the coals
drifted across
the small cemetery.

laurie spooned potato
sald onto the kids'
plates.

he nestled each hot
dog into a bun, and set
them on the tailgate
of their station wagon.

then, he set the grill
as close to the coals as
possible, placed a hot dog
in the middle and began
tracking the time it
would take for dogs'
peach colored casing to
turn black.
