his father still called highland park "the old neighborhood." well, this wasn't the old neighborhood.
this wasn't the highland park of mom and pop grocery stores, and
sturdy brick homes built by men
who gave their lives to the auto plants

this was an entirely new neighbor-
hood that had been breaking down for a long time before drugs and desparation broke it down completely.

theives, addicts, and the poor, who like a double amputee had no way to move out from this circus tent of human deprivation.
