After a night of little sleep and a day of industry, he paused, resting in a brown study, his eyes staring at nothing, and listened to his body—how his heart beat a little harder from the caffeine, the slight pressure in his chest, his eyes dry, his muscles tired and yearning for rest—and he experienced something he would otherwise have missed, the quiet, almost somber joy he carried with him every day.
